The Thames Club is a prestigious private members’ health club and proud winner of the UK Active Independent Health Club of the Year. As part of our continued growth and commitment to excellence, we are seeking an experienced and passionate Fitness Manager to join our leadership team.
This is a pivotal role within the Club, ideal for a dynamic fitness professional with strong organisational skills, proactive leadership qualities, and a genuine passion for creating outstanding gym and group exercise experiences for members.
Main Job Responsibilities
The Fitness Manager will lead the fitness experience at The Thames Club, overseeing and managing all aspects of the day-to-day fitness operations, ensuring the highest standards of service, safety, and member satisfaction across the gym floor and group exercise facilities.
The Fitness Manager will coach, motivate, and develop the fitness team to deliver an exceptional experience for every member, oversee member onboarding, and ensure a high-energy, engaging club environment.
The Fitness Manager will play a key role in supporting the Head of Fitness in the delivery, innovation and development of the Club’s fitness offering, including assisting with group exercise timetable coordination, instructor management, and the ongoing improvement of all fitness services.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee the daily running of the gym floor and group exercise studios, ensuring smooth and professional operation at all times
- Maintain an exceptional fitness environment aligned with member expectations and club standards
- Support and motivate fitness staff, personal trainers, and instructors to deliver the highest standard of service
- Ensure all fitness facilities remain clean, safe, well-presented, and fully operational
- Respond to member feedback and fitness-related enquiries in a timely manner
- Assist the Head of Fitness with the coordination, development, and promotion of fitness and group exercise services
- Support the ongoing growth and improvement of The Thames Club fitness product through new concepts and ideas
- Deliver structured 1:1 reviews with the fitness team
- Ensure the fitness team is visible on the gym floor, delivering high-quality interactions to increase member engagement and usage
- Own the member journey, ensuring excellent availability for onboarding sessions
- Lead the activation and execution of signature fitness products specific to The Thames Club
- Lead by example in operational excellence, keeping the team updated on fitness trends, initiatives, and club procedures
- Monitor and drive the fitness team to consistently meet or exceed key performance indicators (KPIs) for member engagement, class attendance and overall club fitness performance
- Communicate, update, and liaise with freelance Personal Trainers regarding rental agreements, club updates, and opportunities for collaboration to ensure alignment and engagement
Communication
- Maintain strong communication with fitness staff, instructors, reception, and sales teams
- Ensure all departments are provided with accurate and up-to-date information on fitness services, class cover, and staffing
- Build positive relationships with members, offering guidance and support to enhance their experience
- Handle member enquiries, feedback, and concerns professionally and efficiently
- Provide regular updates to the Head of Fitness regarding significant fitness or operational matters
Operational Standards
- Ensure the gym floor, hot yoga reception, and group exercise studios meet the highest standards of cleanliness, presentation, and functionality
- Oversee staff rotas for the gym floor and hot yoga reception, ensuring adequate cover across operating hours
- Monitor equipment condition and report any building or structural faults promptly to the Facilities Manager
- Maintain a machinery improvements list alongside a traffic light system for the Head of Fitness each month
- Ensure fitness services, classes, and daily operations run smoothly, on time, and to the required standard
- Maintain a safe, welcoming, and motivating atmosphere for all members
- Use initiative to drive ideas and suggestions around how we can continue to improve the fitness offering to the members
Group Exercise Responsibilities
- A key part of this role is supporting the group exercise programme at The Thames Club
- Assist the Head of Fitness with group exercise timetable coordination
- Manage instructor availability and arrange class cover when required
- Regularly audit classes to ensure the highest quality of delivery and member experience
- Support and mentor instructors where needed to maintain consistent standards
- Work closely with the Head of Fitness to explore and implement new class concepts and fitness trends
Staff and Compliance Management
- Ensure all instructor and personal trainer insurance documents, qualifications, and certifications are maintained and up to date
- Support the recruitment, induction, and development of fitness staff and instructors where required
- Encourage a high-performing, member-focused fitness team culture
- Assist in addressing staffing or operational concerns in line with management expectations
Other Responsibilities
- Support the planning and delivery of fitness-related member events, challenges, and engagement initiatives
- Assist with departmental administration as required
- Ensure the fitness operation supports the overall success and reputation of The Thames Club
- In addition, as a Duty Manager, you will maintain operational standards, ensure health and safety compliance, and support the commercial performance of the club in the absence of the Facilities Manager or other Heads of Departments
The duty manager role includes:
o Deliver Duty Manager responsibilities with consistency, ensuring member areas are proficiently
managed and staff conduct is maintained.
o Ensure all staff are clear on responsibilities and tasks per shift.
o Provide a great welcome, tours, and member experience at all times.
o Maintain compliance with all health and safety regulations and club policies.
About You
- Level 3 qualified Personal Trainer
- Proven experience of strong leadership and organisational skills with experience managing teams and co-ordinating studios
- Confident communicator with the ability to motivate staff and engage members
- Passion for health, fitness, and member wellbeing and knowledge of current and growing fitness trends
- Flexible approach to working hours, including evenings and weekends
- An Exercise to Music, Yoga, Pilates instructor qualification, or Assessor qualification would be an advantage
